Team Sky and Geraint Thomas could part ways in bid to establish himself as Grand Tour contender

Geraint Thomas could be set to leave Team Sky at the end of the 2018 season in a bid to further establish himself as a Grand Tour contender.

The Welshman sees his contract finish with the team at the end of next season and has commented that he will certainly 'want to sit down and listen' to offers from other teams.

In an interview with BBC Wales, the double Olympic champion also admitted his 2018 season will be shaped around the ambitions of team leader Chris Froome rather than his own.

'This year my programme is based on what Froomey's doing,' he said.

'Trek-Segafredo have shown an interest and there are some other teams as well. I certainly want to sit down and listen to what they've got to say.'

Hen went on to clarify, 'I'm not saying I want to leave or I'm going to but I certainly want to sit down and see what everyone has got to say.'

With Froome declaring that he will race the Giro d'Italia next season before attempting a record-equalling fifth Tour de France victory, Thomas has found himself at a loose end.

Having entered this season's Giro as joint team leader with Mikel Landa, Thomas was the victim of an unfortunate crash on Stage 9 to Blockhaus in which he and Landa crashed as a result of a stationary motorbike.

Despite battling on the finish the stage, Thomas later abandoned the race bringing an end to his pursuit of the pink jersey.

After recovering in time for the Tour, Thomas became the first Welshman ever to wear the yellow jersey before crashing and abandoning his second Grand Tour of the season with a broken collarbone.

Thomas will not have the same opportunity to lead Team Sky in Italy next season with Froome attempting a historic win, meaning the Welshman's main role in 2018 is likely to be as a mountain domestique at the Tour.

While Thomas understands the significance of Froome's record attempt, he admits that age is not on his side and that he still harbours many of his own ambitions.

'I'm not getting any younger. I don't feel old, but I'm 31 now and I probably only have three or four more years at the very top, so I want to make the most of those.'
