Virtual cycling game Zwift has launched its first Alpine-style climb called Alpe du Zwift, a 12km mountain climb.
This latest extension to the online app will see its first ever true mountain ascent which will average 8.5% over the entire 12km climb with a total of 21 switchbacks. The entire climb will see the virtual riders climb 1,036m.
With its snaking nature and average gradient, the new climb has been clearly modelled on the French climb of Alpe d'Huez, probably the most famous of the classic Alpine peaks tackled in the Tour de France.
Alpe du Zwift has been born out of calls from users for the app to build an in-game mountain, something it has done to great effect. Zwift hopes this latest extension will act as the perfect training platform for those looking to replicate the feel of the real mountains of Europe from the comfort of their own home.
The newly added Alpe du Zwift will be accessed through the Watopia map and will only be available to Zwift users of Level 12 and over – although those Level 11 and lower can ride this mountain if riding with a friend at this higher level.
The new mountain will also be used in future Zwift Gran Fondos and organised rides.
