Chris Froome has taken to an alternative method of training while in Colombia by taking his time-trial bike on to some of the country's unmade roads.
The four-time Tour de France champion posted to both Strava and Instagram to show off his training ride that included taking his Pinarello Bolide bike on some technical looking tracks during a 188km ride in Colombia.
Joined by young South American teammates Egan Bernal and Jhonathan Narvaez, Froome spent five and a half hours exploring the countryside just south-east of Medellin, which happened to also include plenty of dirt paths.
Froome seemed keen to join the recent gravel bandwagon although appeared not to care for specific equipment. Fixed to the Bolide TT bike, which retails for around £11,000 for the frameset, was a pair of deep section Shimano Dura-Ace wheels and rim brakes.
Regardless of terrain, the 33-year-old seemed to hold good speed across the uphill tracks and escaped getting any punctures.
Also, Froome managed to also maintain an average speed of 34.6kmh while also amassing a total of 2,715m in elevation.
Alongside the gravel paths, Froome also posted videos of him climbing a considerably steep road and also riding along a main road with police outriders.
Maybe due to not sharing the same appetite for off-roading as Froome, both Bernal and Navaraez only covered 131km and 122km to Froome's 188km, respectively.
While Froome's ability to negotiate tricky gravel tracks on a time-trial bike should be applauded, we should also take a minute to appreciate that Froome managed to ride for as long as he did on such an uncomfortable bike.
Froome is currently in South America preparing to start his season at the Colombia 2.1 stage race which begins on Tuesday 12th February. Narvaez will make his Team Sky debut at the race while Bernal will look to defend his overall title.
After this, Froome will begin his focus on a record-equalling fifth Tour de France title but, if this recent ride is anything to go by, do not be surprised if he appears on the start list of Paris-Roubaix or Tro Bro Leon this spring.
