The Team Ineos rider underwent surgery in Saint-Etienne following his high-speed crash

Chris Froome remains in intensive care after undergoing overnight surgery for the multiple injuries sustained during a high-speed crash at the Criterium du Dauphine.

The six-time Grand Tour winner was operated on overnight at the Saint-Etienne hospital after fracturing his right femur, elbow and multiple ribs after hitting a wall on a recon of the Stage 4 time-trial in Roanne.

Froome had been treated roadside for the injuries before being airlifted to the nearby Rouanne hospital for initial treatment. The 34-year-old was then transferred to Saint-Etienne where he underwent the surgery.

At the hospital were Team Ineos doctor Richard Usher and Froome's wife Michelle, who tweeted last night, 'Chris is in surgery at the moment to repair the multiple fractures, please keep him in your thoughts. I hope to be able to share a message from him tomorrow morning.'

Dave Brailsford also spoke to the BBC last night about the situation telling the Radio 5Live Bespoke podcast that he was in intensive care and that the situation was still evolving.

'He’s been operated on to make sure that the first phase of medical care is as optimal as possible and we will manage it from there. It’s an evolving situation. It is concerning, there is no doubt about that,' said Brailsford.

'There are crashes and bad crashes and this was a bad crash.'

The priority for Froome will now be to recover fully from his extensive injuries.

It's confirmed that he will miss next month's Tour de France but it also seems conceivable that he will also miss the rest of the 2019 season considering the length of time other cyclists have taken to recover from similar injuries.
