Richard Thodey, a teacher from Matlock, has broken a 132-year-old World Record, riding from Land’s End to John o’Groats on a penny-farthing in just 4 days and 12 hours.
The former UK National Penny Farthing Champion departed Land’s End in Cornwall at 06:00 on Saturday 20th July and arrived in John o'Groats at 17:52 on Wednesday 24th.
The Derbyshire man slashed 13 hours and 53 minutes off the record set in 1886 by Victorian teenager G.P. Mills, who finished in 5 days, 1 hour and 45 minutes.
‘I wasn't entirely convinced myself that it was possible, but everyone else believed in me so I want to say a massive thank you,’ Thodey said.
‘It's been an extremely hard thing to do - not just for me, but for the crew following as well, their support along with the public has made this journey unforgettable.’
Alongside making the world record attempt, Thodey was using this opportunity to raise money for his chosen charity, Children in Need. With donations still open, he has so far raised almost £8,000.
A documentary about his experience of the record-breaking ride will be released by 4 Season Collective later this year.
