Team Ineos rider Filippo Ganna has set an incredible individual pursuit World Record of 4.02.647 to win the Track World Cup in Minsk.
This time saw the Italian set the record twice in one day after having already ridden a 4.04.252 in the qualifying round on Sunday 3rd November. Going two seconds quicker in the final, he comfortably beat John Archibald and previous record-holder Aston Lambie into second and third respectively.
Lambie held the record before Sunday having set a time of 4.05.423 in Cochabamba, Bolivia while riding the Pan-American Games. The American's record was set at a high altitude of 2,500m, which only makes Ganna's sea-level record all the more impressive.
Ganna is the first rider to set the record at sea level since Australian Jack Bobridge rode a 4.10.534 in Sydney eight years ago, a time that broke Chris Boardman's 15-year-old record.
Unlike many of his rivals, Ganna's lap times got progressively quicker throughout the entire race with no drop in speed towards the latter stages of the effort.
After a modest first lap of 22.042 seconds, Ganna was able to go sub-14.500 on his final four laps with a terminal velocity of 62.7kph.
Putting the Italian's efforts into further perspective, the 23-year-old's solo time of 4.02.647 would have been quick enough to beat the 4km team pursuit record held in 1993 by Australia, a time of 4.03.840.
