Colombian tells press he will be attempting a Giro-Tour double after months of speculation

Nairo Quintana has told reporters in his native Colombia that he will be riding both the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France in 2017.

The confirmation of this prestigious 'double' attempt - last pulled off by Marco Pantani in 1998 - comes after months of speculation, in which the idea has been raised and later quelled by various parties on numerous occasions.

However, speaking on Wednesday, Quintana said: 'The final decision that we are making is to do the Giro and the Tour de France,' leaving little doubt that he will be taking on both Grand Tours in 2017 after all.

Quintana won the Giro back in 2014, winning comfortably in front of compatriot Rigoberto Uran, and won the 2016 Vuelta over long-time rival Chris Froome, but has never won the Tour de France despite three podium finishes.

Competition at the Giro this year will likely come in the form of Italian duo Vincenzo Nibali of Bahrain-Merida and Fabio Aru of Astana, on a mountainous route that includes four summit finishes. Down to ride the Tour at the time of writing is Chris Froome of Sky and Richie Porte of BMC, and while the race programme of other Grand Tour contenders such as Esteban Chaves and Romain Bardet has not been confirmed, it is thought they will be present in France too.
