Cinnamon Cafe in Windsor Royal Shopping Centre faces closure as Aviva Investors refuses new long-term lease

Famed for its sugary cinnamon buns, Cinnamon Cafe in the heart of Windsor is one the most popular hotspots for cyclists in the south of England.

However, it now faces the prospect of closing down as its lease has not been renewed by the owners of the Windsor Royal Shopping Centre, Aviva Investors.

The cafe has long since been very friendly to cyclists, offering cyclists a 10% discount on all purchases. Positioned right in the heart of Windsor’s old town, opposite Windsor Castle, it is a hub for numerous loops from the Chilterns or from London.

It is the featured cafe for Strava’s recommended London to Windsor loop.

Rolling contract

The cafe’s five-year lease has been replaced with a rolling one-month contract starting from next month, which owner Ian Jones has described as ‘a stay of execution.’ Jones has also had to warn staff of imminent redundancy if the lease expires.

The cafe takes its name from its famed cinnamon buns, but it also offers what many attest is the best coffee in Windsor.

On Saturday and Sunday mornings the cafe positions bike racks outside to cater for the large amount of cyclists that stop for a mid-ride breakfast. It also offers free use of a pump and puncture repair kits.

An online petition has been started on change.org to save the cafe, and many cyclists and local customers have been voicing their objections on social media to Aviva Investments and Capita Property, using the #savecinnamonwindsor hashtag.
