With options covering Shimano, FSA, Cannondale and SRAM, there’s long been one glaring omission from Stages’ crank based watt meter offering. Now users of Italy’s favorite groupset will also be catered for with the launch of units for Campagnolo Super Record, Record, and Chorus cranks.
Founded in Portland, Stages brought its first revolutionary crank based meter to market in 2012 and it quickly shot to prominence thanks in part thanks to a relatively low price, along with a successful partnership with the data-obsessed Team Sky.
However, until now Stages has struggled to integrate the technology into Campagnolo’s uniquely constructed crank arms.
'While we’ve produced carbon power meters to work with SRAM, FSA, and Race Face crank sets for some time, the Campagnolo carbon power meters proved to be a unique engineering challenge,' said Pat Warner, Stages senior vice president.
'Campagnolo’s carbon design is entirely different and it took more time than anticipated to meter. We ended up creating a new iteration of our Stages Cycling power meter for the Italian brand’s cranksets.'
This unique design can be seen in the ‘wings’ that are just visible on both the top and bottom of the crank arm. Unlike Stages’ fully embedded designs, these actually measure flex across the unit.
'When we initially figured out how to constantly gauge a carbon crank arm we underestimated the influence of the arm’s design, and once in testing we learned that the Campagnolo needed both a custom gauge and custom gauge placement in order to accurately and consistently measure the crank arm’s deflection.
'It took this long to get the gauge design correct and implemented in production. Our Campagnolo meters look different but they have been our most tested meters to date and now we’re as confident in their quality as any of the other meters we’re manufacturing' explained Matt Pacocha, Stages Cycling Global Marketing Director.
While UK prices have yet to be confirmed, the units will retail in the US for $949 (approx £770) for Super Record, $799 (approx £645) for Record and $699 (approx £565) for Chorus.
