The Dolomites are a popular destination for riders looking for sweeping landscapes, beautiful vistas and epic climbs. But south of the more famous Passo Giau and Sella Ronda lie the Pale di San Martino mountains, offering a playground of gruelling ascents and wild scenery without the madding crowds.

And that’s where Cyclist heads this month for a loop of the region that takes in four major ascents, including the formidable Passo San Pellegrino, a regular inclusion in the Giro d’Italia with sustained sections upwards of 10%.

If that’s not enough climbing for you, the next instalment of our Classic Climbs series takes us to Luz Ardiden, a Pyrenean climb that has become a staple of the Tour despite only featuring in the race for the first time in 1985.
