Rider crashed in closing kilometre of Stage 6 at the under 23 race

Tom Pidcock's Yorkshire World Championship hopes could be in the balance after he was admitted to hospital after a nasty crash in the closing kilometre of Stage 6 of the Tour de l'Avenir.

The 20-year-old had made it into the lead group of 15 riders on the stage ending in Privas before crashing and injuring himself in the closing metres of the stage. Switzerland's Stefan Bissegger took the stage win.

The Team Wiggins-Le Col rider representing the Great Britain national team was immediately taken to a local hospital although his injuries are yet to be confirmed.

Pidcock had been riding well in the U23 race, starting Stage 6 in ninth on General Classification only 1 minute 7 seconds adrift of race leader Simon Gugliemi of France with three stages in the mountains remaining.

He was also leading the green jersey points competition, too, having finished in the top five on four of the opening five stages.

While there are no details as to how badly Pidcock is injured, immediate concerns will centre around whether the Yorkshireman will recover in time for his home World Championships in a month's time.

Pidcock is among the favourites to take victory in both the road and time trial races in Harrogate at the end of September to add to his existing rainbow jersey haul that includes a junior time trial championship and multiple cyclocross titles.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available
